Hengwaithdy, The Old Workhouse
Crickhowell
Hengwaithdy is a large Victorian house with a tremendous history. The house was built with Welsh stone and dates from the 19th Century, when it was the Master’s House for the Crickhowell Union Workhouse.
This was where the very poorest people in the community were sent when they had nowhere to live. Neighbouring properties were once the Chapel, the Infirmary and the Laundry, amongst others.
Now the area is very sought after, with the buildings converted to beautiful properties.
Set on a wooded hillside called the Dardy, there are superb views over Crickhowell, the Usk Valley, Table Mountain and Sugar Loaf. The Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal runs just below the property and is easily accessible.
The present owners, who live at the property,
have imaginatively converted one floor of the
building to a spacious apartment for letting.
